You can contact us by using the form at the top right hand corner of this page.

In order to complete the form we need the following information and it is helpful if you can include this when you submit the form:

  • The name and address of the person who has died
  • The date they passed away
  • Whether the property is occupied and if so who by
  • Whether the property was rented and if so who is the landlord
  • The name and address of the executors

What happens to any outstanding bills if the Council Tax payer dies?

If there is another person living in the property, they will become responsible for paying the Council Tax.

If the deceased person lived alone and owned the property, their estate will normally be exempt from paying Council Tax until the date that Probate or Letters of Administration are granted. From that date, provided that the property remains unoccupied, an exemption will apply for a maximum period of 6 months. After that, the estate will be responsible for paying the Council Tax if the property remains empty.

We will require the following information, when it becomes available -

  • The date that the person passed away. (copy of death certificate needed)
  • The name and address of any solicitor acting in the Administration of the estate
  • The name and address of the executor
  • The date that Probate/Letters of Administration are granted. (copy of this is required)
  • If the property is sold, the date of sale and the name and address of the new owner
  • If the property is transferred to another person, the name and address of that person and the exact date of transfer
  • If the property is let, the name and previous address of the tenant(s) and the date that the tenancy commenced
