The council is reminding people to maintain home and car security in the hot weather as the increased temperatures have a direct impact on the number of burglaries due to a lack of security.

Don't be complacent

If you are in your back garden, secure windows and doors in other parts of your property. If you leave your house please check that all windows and doors are shut.

Avoid being a victim of burglary

You can reduce the risk of burglary by:

  • keeping doors and windows shut if you aren’t in the room
  • thinking about which windows you leave open in hot weather
  • remembering some burglars can get through small spaces so, if in doubt, shut and lock it
  • locking garden equipment and ladders away
  • securing sheds with strong padlocks.
  • Burglars will seize any opportunity to steal and will look for doors and windows left open on hot days.

Advice for motorists

Motorists are advised to ensure that:

  • windows and doors are locked,
  • sat nav suction marks are wiped off windscreen
  • no items are left on display in their cars
