Alcohol Awareness Week - 14-20 November 2011

Alcohol awareness week
A leading councillor is urging people to join in a Lancashire-wide “big conversation” about drinking alcohol.
The big conversation centres on the social dangers of excessive drinking as well as its health effects – and includes a survey and a Kirkham-based youth evening on fun alternatives to alcohol-based cocktails.
Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Alcohol is fine in the correct proportions and this month’s Alcohol Awareness Week is concentrating on the wider social consequences.
“We’re asking people to think of things such as walking home alone after a night out, saying things you might later regret and even sexual assault.

Keeping your good times good
“All these things are related to excessive drinking. They are things that can be avoided by staying in control. Young people especially think it is cool to drink far too much – but it can be embarrassing and even disastrous.
“The NHS has launched a survey on the social consequences of drinking and I hope that people will complete it to help us piece together the real picture of alcohol use in the area.”
The NHS is organising a “mock-cocktail” evening of non-alcoholic alternatives for young people at Kirkham Youth Base at 6.30pm on Thursday 17 November.
