On this page plans for the proposed improvements to the stations of Ansdell, St Annes and Lytham can be seen. These plans have been identified through a public consultation process involving two design workshops. Consensus about the scope of works and the priority has been reached during this consultation process. Any comments are welcome and can be made at the bottom of this page. The Council is currently working with partner organisations to put the funding in place, but at this stage it is unlikely that all of the works identified on the plans will be deliverable.
Please see the related downloads section to the right of the page to view the plans.
Lytham Station - this is partof a larger project to form a link between Lytham Green and Lytham Hall to encourage footfall between the destinations. The station is an important arrival point and serves Lytham Hall, the Town centre and other attractions. The scheme includes enhancements to the platforms and access, improvements to signage and information aimed at encouraging greater visits to Lytham Hall and other visitor attractions. Enhancements to adjoining Sparrow Park will accentuate the link. Small scale paving improvements are proposed and the opening up of the historic vista of the listed gatehouses of Lytham Hall to incorporate their illumination. These improvements meet the dual objectives of enhancing the environment during the Open whilst also having a legacy value for visitors and residents in the many years following the event.
The first priority for funding has been identified as improvement works to the station entrance area and footpath through ‘Sparrow Park’. The next priority would be all other works identified on the attached plan. Temporary works to the ‘abandoned platform’ will now be delivered either by the Open for the Arts Programme or by Lytham in Bloom under licence from Network Rail; although this latter method is unlikely to be delivered before the open in July 2012 and further details are not available at this time.
St Annes Station - the scheme will remedy the unsightly derelict platform opposite the station and improve the visual link between the town centre and the station for pedestrians. It will also greatly enhance pedestrian safety in and around the Crescent
Gardens. These improvements meet the dual objectives of enhancing the environment during the Open whilst also having a legacy value for visitors and residents in the many years following the event.
The first priority for funding has been identified as improvement works to the station entrance area and car park. The next priority is the footpath linking the station, the town centre and the steps in the Crescent Gardens. Temporary works to the ‘abandoned platform’ will now be delivered by the Open for the Arts Programme, similar to those proposed at Lytham however this land is in private ownership and an approach has not yet been made. Once final confirmation of all the funding has been obtained then an approach will be made.
Ansdell Station - This station is the closest to the Royal Lytham St Annes golf course, and immediately adjacent to one of the pedestrian entrances to the course. It will undoubtedly be a key arrival point for visitors, arriving by train, on foot, or park and ride. The project will be linked to works by the Royal and Ancient, and looking beyond the 2012 Open Championship, this station is well placed to serve Fairhaven Lake, itself the subject of potential improvement proposals, and Ansdell centre.
The proposed works are more limited than at the other two stations as befitting the physical environment. The works include lasting improvements to the landscaping of the station environment.
