Bird Names for Fairhaven Boats

Fairhaven Lake Show
The start of summer means staff at Fylde Borough Council can now prepare to launch the boats on Fairhaven Lake and this year they will be putting two new boats on the water.
Last year the Council took delivery of two new boats and ran a competition to name them before their maiden voyage. The Winners were told of their success but Ward Councillor, Cheryl Little, decided that it would be better for the boats first trip to be put off until the summer when the lake would be at its best. The official naming ceremony is now set to take place on Wednesday 08 April 2009 at 12:00.
The two 14 foot long rowing boats known as ‘Skiffs’ will be named ‘The Swift’ and ‘The Swallow’ after Cllr. Little and council officials waded through over 300 entries sent in by members of the public. The winning names were sent in by Margaret Boulton from Lancaster and Jenny Lucking, aged seven, from St Annes and were chosen as they complimented each other; whilst portraying the rich bird life that frequents the lakeside.
The new boats will add to the fleet of 36 boats, including four other rowing boats, already in use on the lake. They are the first new boats the lake has seen in nearly 30 years and to mark the occasion the Council decided to make them the first of the boats on the lake to have a name.
Fairhaven Ward Councillor Cheryl Little, said: “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to put their suggestions forward; an excellent response; not only from local people, but as the joint winner was from Lancaster, it illustrates Fairhaven Lake receives visitors from all over Lancashire”.
The people that suggested the chosen names have been invited to attend the naming ceremony of the boats and be honoured with the opportunity to take them for their first official row around the lake.
