Another of Fylde’s parks and open spaces is getting a boost thanks to a group of local residents who have joined forces with Fylde Borough Council as Friends of Hope Street Park (FoHSP).
The 110 year old park remains hugely popular with local residents and, backed by Fylde Borough Council, now has an opportunity to rejuvenate to ensure that it not only meets the needs of current generations but will continue to serve the community into the future. The Friends group will work voluntarily to arrange meetings, look after the bureaucracy, and work with the Council to obtain funding.
Ian Roberts, chairperson of the friends group said: “Hope Street Park is a much loved facility that has served the local community since late Victorian times. Having such a long history means that the park is distinguished from other local recreational areas by having established planting and an abundance of mature trees. But the park is showing its age and the time is right to give it a fresh lease of life.
Councillor Simon Renwick, Cabinet Member for Community Services at Fylde Borough Council that controls the park, said:”I have said before how important these friends groups are for keeping our recreational grounds in top condition. The funds they can access help us to make some drastic improvements I hope we can now start to look forward to improving Hope Street.”
FoHSP are now looking to find out what local residents want from a 21st Century recreational area. Initial canvassing has brought forward some suggestions such as:-
- improving the children’s play area, restoring the swings in particular,
- reinstating the tennis courts,
- ensuring that dog owners clean up after their pets,
- installing facilities for skate board and/or BMX users,
- erecting a graffiti wall,
- creating a dogs-off-leads/agility area.
So if you use the bowling greens, play football, want to play on swings, if you walk your dog, simply enjoy a stroll through the park, or never go near the place for some reason, tell the group what you think by contacting Adam Nagy on adamn@fylde.gov.uk or 01253 658 658.
