Council employees have also been officially recognised for their fairness in decision making and dedication in driving forward Fairtrade.
The council has now been accredited, by the Fairtrade Foundation, as an official Fairtrade Workplace to mark the dedication of staff in supporting Fairtrade by using and serving Fairtrade products in the workplace. Chief Executive of the council, Phil Woodward, accepted the certificate on behalf of staff from Rev Glyn Eatock, Chair of Fylde’s Fairtrade Steering Group, earlier this week.
Mr Woodward said: “Since being awarded Fairtrade Status back in June 2008 we have done a lot to promote and encourage the purchase of Fairtrade products and trading fairly both internally and externally. Through our partnership working we are justly proud to call ourselves a Fairtrade Borough.”
At a meeting of the full council last week (27 July) the council agreed to continue its support of Fairtrade by reviewing its policy on Fairtrade to bring it up to date in order to continue to be a strong exemplar for the cause.
Rev Glyn Eatock Chair of Fylde’s Fairtrade Steering Group said: “Fylde has been leading the way in Fairtrade and is acting as a leader for others to follow. The commitment of Councillors and staff at Fylde Borough Council in receiving these coveted awards is most encouraging. For those of us who have been working behind the scenes, having stalls in churches and local community groups meetings it has now all been worth the effort.”
Also, as part of the Fairtrade Borough initiative, new signage recognising the borough as Fairtrade friendly has been placed on Progress Way off the M55 to welcome visitors to the Borough of Fylde.
