Fylde’s Community Safety Partnership has turned its attention to acquisitive crime and is aiming to tackle the issue by issuing a simple message to residents - ‘Keep it Safe, Keep it LOCKED!’
The message will be rolled out through various methods in the future in an attempt to reduce the rate of acquisitive crime which has seen a very slight increase in the borough in recent months. The crime categories which make up this crime classification are Burglary in a Dwelling; Theft of Motor Vehicles; Theft from Motor Vehicles and Robbery. The police have discovered that many of these crimes are occurring due to owners not locking or securing their property.
As a first step to getting the message under resident’s noses Fylde Community Safety Partnership has funded the initiative to place stickers on all the grey Wheelie bins in the borough. The innovative idea being that everyone will see the simple message when they put the bins out and be reminded to lock garden gates, doors and windows.
Bryan Ward, Fylde Community Safety Manager said “The Partnership is fully supportive of this crime prevention initiative which highlights a very important thought provoking message to the householders of Fylde. On a daily basis, they will be reminded of the consequences of not locking their property”
To help with the initiative the partnership has turned to the Council to task Waste Operatives from Fylde Borough Council with fixing labels to every grey wheelie bin during collections being made over the next two weeks. Councillor David Eaves, Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said: “This is a very simple and effective way of getting a message to homeowners. They look at their bins regularly and so will be reminded of the message. We do not normally allow people to place stickers on bins but this is such a worthwhile message we are happy to support the campaign.”
Inspector Laura Lawler from Blackpool and the Fylde Police added: “This is a great example of partner agencies working together with the aim of reducing opportunities for criminals to commit crime in the Fylde.
“It is imperative that the public think about crime prevention, in particular by locking windows and doors and not leaving valuable items in cars.”
