Building on staff

A house is only as firm as the foundations it is built on! The same thing goes for companies and their staff.

Fylde Borough Council is embracing the ethos as it looks to its own workforce for improvement and inspiration.

The Council asked staff for suggestions on how it could improve services for residents building on the knowledge they had gained doing their job. In response, one member of staff, Martin Bayley, a technical officer, suggested entering in to a drain clearance service with a local contractor.

As a result of implementing this idea the Council has made over £1,000 profit in the first six months which can be ploughed back in to Council services.

Councillor John Coombes, Leader of Fylde Borough Council said: “Our staff are at the front line of our services and have first hand knowledge of the practicalities of the way we do things. Top management can easily see what is best on paper but the input from staff that will actually be doing the job is vital in making sensible decisions. This one idea for a change to systems has made a dramatic impact that will benefit our residents in the long run.”

Also recently, Management staff and Cabinet Members took part in a learning session which had been specially organised with representatives of Beaverbrooks based in Lytham St Annes. The company was named as the Sunday Times Best People To Work For this year and, as it is based locally, council officers invited relevant senior level managers to speak to them about how they had achieved this accolade.

Councillor Coombes, said: “We strive to be the best and I firmly believe that a happy workforce is one that will deliver the best service for customers – the residents of the Borough. I was very keen to hear what Beaverbrooks had done to motivate its staff so well and was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was small details that made a difference.

“We will be looking at how the many things we learned at the seminar can be adapted to our own organisation to further improve the already dedicated work force we have at the council.”
