There’s a lot to see beside the seaside
Being by the seaside is a pleasure many of us may take for granted.

St Annes Beach
We’re used to it. As part of National Marine Week, Fylde’s Sand Dunes Project Officer has organised a series of fun activities to remind locals how lucky they are to be beside the seaside.
National Marine Week actually lasts two weeks from 01 August to 16 August and will see all the Wildlife Trusts around the country encourage people back on to the beach, whatever the weather. Working with Fylde Borough Council, Blackpool Council and the Wildlife Trust, the series of events on St Annes and Blackpool beaches have been designed to help residents, particularly families, explore the coast line and discover all the beach has to offer.
Anne Heslop, the Sand Dunes Project Officer, working out of Fylde Borough Council, said: “During National Marine Week we want people to get out and start to explore what lives in, on and around our shores and to discover the secrets of our seas too. The Fylde’s coastline is host to an amazing array of wildlife; many thousands of species live in our seas including a myriad of fascinating fish, crustaceans and molluscs.”
Events include:
Longest Razor Shell Competition - All fortnight. Submit your shells at St. Annes Town Hall or the Solaris and Sealife Centres in Blackpool.
"Head down to the beach and try to find the longest razor shell possible (that’s the long thin ones!). Take your shell to one of the collection points and leave with your contact details. The competition will close on Sunday 16th August and a winner will be chosen."
Flotsam and Jetsam Findings - Sunday 2nd August, Meet at the Reserve Building opposite Thursby Nursing Home, St Annes, 13:00-15:00
"We will be heading out onto the beach to see what we can find. Whether it’s litter, driftwood or marine life, we’ll be collecting, recording and analysing it to see what conclusions we can draw."
Dunes Walk - Wednesday 5th August, Meet at the Reserve Building opposite Thursby Nursing Home, St Annes, 10am-12pm
"Come and find out why Fylde’s sand dunes are important to people and wildlife. Join the Dunes Officer to learn about the unique flora and fauna and what is being done to protect and enhance the dunes."
Sand Sculpture Competition - Sunday 9th August, Next to St. Annes Pier
"Feeling artistic? We’re holding a marine theme sand sculpture competition. Different classes for all ages. You can register from 12pm, judging will be held from 15:00."
Under the Sea Family Fun - Saturday 8th August and Saturday 15th August, At the Solaris Centre, South Shore Promenade, Blackpool. Drop in from 12pm-4pm.
"Do you and your children want to learn about life under the sea and make some fishy arts and crafts? Just drop in to the Solaris Centre and join in with the marine fun."
Councillor Susan Fazackerley, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at Fylde Borough Council, said: “We are lucky to have such a diverse eco-system with the beaches along our coast. From Sand Dunes to rock pools, there is so much to find if you know where to look and these events will show people how to get the best from our beach.”
Councillor Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Regeneration at Blackpool Council, said: “These events will be both fun and educational and I hope they are well attended. We are so used to having the beach on our doorstep that we often don’t appreciate the complexity of it. I hope people will take this opportunity to regain their love of the beach.”
