The Armed Forces Day flag is being raised by Fylde Borough Council to officially open a week of celebrations in honour of our armed forces.
The Ministry of Defence is encouraging individuals and businesses alike up and down the country to show their support for Britain’s Armed Forces by flying a special flag celebrating Armed Forces Day.
The Council has pledged to raise the Armed Forces Day flag on Monday 22 June 2009 outside the front of the Town Hall at 10:00 am for 10:30 am, to mark the build up to the first ever national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June 2009. The raising of the flag will celebrate the UK’s Armed Forces – past, present and future.
The design of the Armed Forces Day flag is based on the Union Jack and it measures 5ft by 3ft.
Representatives from Weeton and Kimberley Barracks, British Legion - ex servicemen will be in attendance to witness the flag being raised.
Councillor John Coombes said: “Our Armed Forces make huge sacrifices to defend the UK and their efforts fully deserve our support and recognition.
“Fylde will be celebrating our veterans’ achievements and with some in attendance, hopefully they will acknowledge our appreciation for their services to the country.
“Not only is Fylde celebrating past achievements, but also what out current personnel achieve and the opportunities that the Armed Forces offers to future recruits.”
The flags are available to buy at a cost of £10, which includes postage and packaging to UK addresses, VAT and a £1 donation to the Forces Children's Trust, a charity devoted to helping dependent children that have lost a parent whilst serving with the Armed Forces.
