Cllr P Rigby
This week the new Mayor of Fylde will be invested into duty at the annual Mayor Making ceremony.
This year the honour is to be bestowed upon Councillor Paul Rigby who is standing down from his position on Fylde Borough Council’s Cabinet in order to fulfil his new role. He will be given his chains of office at the Council’s AGM at Lowther Pavillion on Wednesday 13 May.
One of six children Councillor Rigby was born in Lytham Hospital on 15 September 1951. He went to St. Cuthbert’s Primary School and Carr Hill Secondary School.
His background is very much in farming; being born in to a farming family on his mother’s side he has lived and farmed in Warton all his life, firstly working on the family farm and for the past 28 years at his own farm, Wrea Brook Farm. After attending Carr Hill High School his son William decided to continue the family tradition and now works with his dad on the family farm.
Paul’s father was a former chairman of the Fylde Rural District Council. Following in his father’s footsteps he became a parish Councillor for Bryning with Warton and Fylde Borough Councillor, initially, for Bryning with Warton and now for Warton and Westby. Since 1987 he has sat as Governor of St. Paul’s C of E Primary School, Trustee of Warton Village Hall Management Committee and Member of the Warton Scout and Guide Management Committee and since 2000 has been Chairman of New Fylde Housing Association.
The Deputy Mayor will also be appointed in the ceremony and this year will be Councillor Patricia Fieldhouse.
The Mayoress is Councillor Paul Rigby’s wife Margaret and their daughter Nicola will also assist with civic duties.
He has been married to Margaret for 34 years and they have two grown up children and one granddaughter. Margaret provides invaluable support to Paul both in terms of the farm and his political career. This mostly involves answering the phone, organising his calendar and getting him to meetings on time! Margaret is also from a farming background; she grew up at Old Hall Farm, Lea and attended St. Andrew’s Primary School and then the Park School in Preston
His daughter Nicola is married to James who works for Bae Systems in Warton and they have a one year old daughter called Grace. Nicola went to St. Paul’s Primary School in Warton before attending Elmslie Girls School Blackpool. After leaving school in 1994 Nicola went to work for Preston City Council where she currently works as a Legal Assistant.
The Mayor will be supporting three local charities this year namely:
- The Rosemere Cancer Foundation
- RNLI – Lytham St Annes Lifeboat
- Friends of Sunnybank Day Centre
