Glen Moody from Carr Hill High School, Kirkham, is celebrating after winning the Lancashire heats of the LACA (Local Authority Catering Association) School Chef of the Year 2009 competition.

In a Masterchef-style contest at Preston College, chefs from schools across the county battled it out to be named Lancashire’s top school chef.

The event included a panel of expert judges including celebrity guest chef, Warrick Dodds, the award-winning head chef of Hastings Eating and Drinking House in Lytham.

Judge Roger Eakhurst, from Lancashire County Commercial Group - Lancashire County Council’s school lunch provider, said: “I'm always very proud of our staff when I see the quality of the lunches they produce.

“The staff in Lancashire’s school kitchens have a wide range of skills and this competition offered a real chance for them to show just how creative they can be.”

"With Warrick Dodds joining the judging panel this year, it really raised the bar and made all the contestants work even harder to put together some interesting and different dishes.

"We’d all like to wish Glen the best of luck representing Lancashire at the regional heats."

Celebrity guest judge Warrick Dodds said: "It was an honour to be invited to judge the competition and I really enjoyed being part of the day.

“The standard of cooking was very impressive and it is fantastic that school chefs are now being encouraged to cook with fresh, local produce. I would like to congratulate Glen and thank all the other contestants for their contribution to this year’s competition.”

Glen cooked up a treat to impress the judges with his exciting menu: Moroccan chicken meatballs in a morrocan style sauce with turmeric rice; followed by Carr Hill chocolate orange and potato cake with fresh orange yogurt sauce.

As the Lancashire winner, Glen will now compete in the regional finals, in a bid for a place in next year’s national final.

He will also receive a meal for two at Warrick’s acclaimed restaurant, Hastings Eating and Drinking House in Lytham, as first prize.

The school chefs from across the county chose their ingredients and devised their own menus ahead of the competition in the hospitality department at Preston College’s Fulwood campus.

The other entrants in the Lancashire heat were:
• Shirley Shaw, Longton Primary School, Preston
• Lorraine Wickstead, Croston Trinity and St Michael's CofE/Methodist Primary School, Chorley
• Cy Hennessey, Burnley Campus
• Beverley Taylor, Brookfield Park Primary School, Skelmersdale
• Anna Culshaw, St Francis of Assisi School, Skelmersdale
• Judy Miller, Withnell Fold Primary School, Chorley
• Sue Saxon, Parbold Douglas CofE Primary School, Parbold
• Glen Moody, Carr Hill High School, Kirkham

The competition, held at the training kitchens of Preston College, saw school chefs battling it out to prepare a two course meal within a strict budget of £1.25 per course.

Each chef had 90 minutes to prepare the dishes. Warrick and his fellow judges observed the cooking, before tasting the food and making their judgement.
