Fylde Borough Council would like to know how residents would like to see the much loved sand dunes protected and enhanced for the future.

Despite widespread historical decline the Sand Dunes are a unique wildlife habitat with over 300 different plant species and a wealth of insects and animals present. However they are also of great importance to our community as a flood defence and place of recreation and enjoyment.

The Fylde Sand Dunes Project, a partnership with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Fylde Borough Council has produced a Management Action Plan to ensure the dunes are conserved. The plan is now available for residents to see and feed back on. It includes projects of management around the North Promenade and the production of some boardwalks in popular areas to protect the dunes.

Councillor Susan Fazackerley, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “The Sand dunes are one of the most popular features of Fylde and as such it is important that we do all we can to protect them through careful and sympathetic management. The Dunes Project Officer has been working hard to survey the dunes and the varied habitats they form and this has had a huge input to the management plan. All that is needed now is to see how the residents feel about those proposals.”

Anne Heslop, the Dunes Project Officer will be available at West Lodge, on St. Georges Rd at the gates of Ashton Gardens between 10am and 4pm on Monday 23 and Wednesday 26 November to answer any questions about the sand dunes and their future management.

The Fylde Sand Dunes Project is also looking for volunteers to help with practical conservation works and beach clean-ups. If you would like to make a difference on the dunes then you can contact Anne Heslop on 01253 658537 for more information or email aheslop@lancswt.org.uk

If you would like a copy of the Management Plan then please go to www.fylde.gov.uk/dunes where it can be downloaded. Full copies of the management plan will also be available to view at the Town Hall.
