Fylde Borough Council has joined a select band of local authorities to achieve the Level 2 of the Charter for Elected Member Development.

The Charter is a well recognised and respected award and one that is sought after by all local authorities in England and Wales. Prior to this year, only two authorities in the region had achieved Level 2.

The Charter recognises best practice in the training and development of local councillors and in particular looks at the impact this has on the local community. Fylde’s award was for the authority’s excellent work with local councillors to develop their IT and computer skills.

Local councillors are provided with a laptop computer to ensure they can meet demand from the community to be more accessible through online communication. In order to help maximise their use of this important means of communication training has been provided on a wide range of IT skills including developing websites, producing online polls and creating a blog as well as the basics of using a computer and effectively managing an email account.

Councillor Keith Hyde, Chairman of the Member Development Steering Group said “we have moved away from an authority where members had very little IT skill and knowledge amongst its elected members to one where we now have bloggers and social networkers engaging with the local community”

“The real success story for Fylde is how far the councillors have come in a short space of time and the number of councillors that have supported each other along the way. Each councillor had their own training needs and developed at their own pace.”

The Council was first awarded Level 1 of the Charter in 2005 achieving Level 2 is an important milestone for the member development work. The Council is committed to the continuous improvement of every member as they face up to new challenges in the future.

The Charter itself was  presented by a Government Minister at an award ceremony in Manchester on November 13th.
