Fylde Borough Council has extended the consultation on proposals to relax the prohibition on street trading in certain parts of Lytham St Annes in order to for residents to be clear on what the proposals actually mean.

The proposals have been suggested in response to representations received in recent years from a number of event organisers who have been unable to allow trading of specialist wares, on a temporary basis, to supplement their proposed events in the resort because of the current restrictions. This has led to some major event organisers taking their business to other parts of the country leading to a loss of national recognition and kudos for Fylde that such events raise and the repeat business they often generate.

The Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Wellbeing, Councillor Albert Pounder said; “We are not looking to open up the area to a free-for-all but merely to change the current absolute prohibition of street trading to one where the prior consent of the Council will be necessary before trading can take place. There will still be strict control over the types of street trading that is allowed and the frequency and locations at which it takes place. What we would not be allowing is just anyone to turn up with burger vans and pitch up wherever they wanted, whenever they wanted, and anyone who suggests otherwise is a long way wide of the mark.”

“The events we are looking to attract are complementary to the quality ambiance and environment that Lytham St Annes is well known for and the loss of major events in the past has meant that the local business community has lost out on the increased tourist footfall that these events bring with them.”

There are a number of areas where street trading is currently consented, including the squares in both St Anne’s and Lytham. The revised proposals look to add to these areas and are intended to support and supplement the local tourist activity in specified areas as follows - Inner Promenade between Ansdell Road South and St Pauls Ave St Anne’s; Lowther Gardens and car park; East Beach, Central Beach and West Beach, Lytham; Wood Street and Wood Street car park, St Annes; Ashton Gardens, St Annes.

The consultation period on the proposals has been extended until Monday 7 December 2009. Details of the proposals are available on the Council’s website.
