Victorian Sash windows, architectural details and real wood burning fires. All things that nobody wants to get rid of in a period property but also things getting in the way of a house being made as energy efficient as it can be. So what can be done to our Victorian homes?
Fylde Low Waste and Energy has joined forces with the Lytham St Annes Civic Society and the Heritage Trust to show just what steps can be taken to save energy in period properties. They will be allowing people entry to the Georgian Lytham Hall and highlight all the different products and schemes that can be used.
Marion Coupe, chair of Lytham St Annes Civic Society said “This country has a huge stock of older housing, and this is a great chance for people to get advice on how to become "green" without destroying our heritage.”
Problems that will be dealt with include the issue of insulating solid walls and attic bedrooms, repairing and replacing sash windows, draft proofing, installing renewable energy technologies and how to make old buildings ‘hang on’ to heat.
The event will take place at Lytham Hall, Lytham St Annes. The hall and an exhibition by specialist installers will be open to all members of the public on Sunday 18 and Monday 19 October from 10:30am to 5pm during which a FLoWE representative will be on hand to answer any queries.
Andrew Loynd, project manager for FLoWE, said: “Most energy saving advice is aimed at post war buildings. This exhibition and seminar will enable owners of older properties and those interested in how to improve older buildings to find out what measures can be taken to make these buildings warmer while, over time, saving money through reduced heating bills.”
On the afternoon of 19 October a seminar will be held where speakers will include author and broadcaster on environmental issues Penney Poyzer who will be talking about the renovations made to her own Victorian house and John Doggart of the Sustainable Energy Academy who will show how older homes can be as energy efficient as newer ones. To book onto the seminar please contact FLoWE on 01253 658 527 or email FLoWE@fylde.gov.uk.
