Example of Lytham in Bloom

After the success of Lytham in the recently announced Britain in Bloom awards the seeds have well and truly been sown for continued success as the Fylde took more awards in the North West in Bloom awards last week.

Last Friday saw this year’s North West in Bloom presentation held in the Floral Hall at the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre. As usual, the Fylde was well represented and achieved a high standard across many of the categories. The list of awards is:

  • Lytham – Winner of small coastal resort category
  • St Annes – Runner up in large coastal resort category
  • Freckleton – Runner up in small town category and discretionary award for most improved submission
  • Elswick – Runner up in small village category
  • Wrea Green – Runner up in small village
  • St Bede’s School, Lytham – Awarded school award and environmental award
  • Strike Lane Primary School, Freckleton – Awarded school award
  • Staining – Commendation for their Carpet Bedded Horse and floral display outside the Plough Pub

The big story of the day was that Lytham have been nominated to represent the North West at next year’s Britain in Bloom award for the second year running. This is unprecedented as, due to the size of North West in Bloom, the organisation has a policy of not entering a town two years in a row.

Trevor Lees, North West in Bloom Coordinator explained: “Again Lytham presented an excellent entry of the highest standard. It is unusual for us to nominate an entry two years on the run but their standard was so high we felt that they would be our best choice to go one step further and hopefully achieve a Gold Medal for the North West in next year's Britain in Bloom.”

Councillor Susan Fazackerley, cabinet Member for Leisure and culture said: “This is fantastic news for Lytham in Bloom. The whole of the Borough did a wonderful job in the North West stage of the judging but for Lytham to be held in such high regard that the organisation is willing to break its own rules in order to put Lytham up for the prestigious title in Britain in Bloom is a real testimony to the group’s hard work.”
