Fylde Council shares in order to learn and improve

Fylde Borough Council is staying at the cutting edge of modernising the way it works and benefitting from an Improvement and Development Agency (I&DeA) programme of political peers with the leader of the council being accredited as a peer himself.

The political peer programme provides local authorities around the country with ‘a critical friend’ who can give them the benefit of their experience, who can tell them what works, what doesn’t and what hurdles face a council. Councillor John Coombes, leader of Fylde Borough Council has recently been accredited as a peer. He is now being asked to share the council’s knowledge as best practice showing other authorities what steps Fylde makes to improve.

Councillor Keith Hyde, Chair of the Member Training Group, explains: “By having an accredited political peer within the council we can show other council’s the work we are currently doing to improve and teach them from our successes and lessons we learned on the way. Peers realise that working together is one of the best ways of raising standards throughout local government.

“However it is about much more than glorifying ourselves. By joining the scheme we can access a number of other peers from other authorities. That means we can learn from them too and take the unique opportunity to develop our skills in new ways. We can embrace the joint working ethos and seek advice on practically every issue faced by local governments at this time.”

Councillors Hyde, Little, Wilson and Small have all benefited recently from this very development programme. They have been able to attend a leadership Academy providing them with extra skills they will be able to use to improve themselves in their roles as councillors.

Cllr Hyde adds: “There is a wealth of knowledge out there in other authorities and we have already learnt a great deal. We can never claim to know everything and every other authority is in exactly the same boat but by sharing knowledge together we can all provide our councillors and officers with the expertise they need to better serve our residents.”
