On Thursday 1st October Blackpool Winter Gardens will play host to a celebration for the over 50’s.  Everyone in that age group is invited to come along for fun, advice and a chance to find out what’s going on in the town.

Blackpool Council is organising Forever Young in Blackpool as part of International Older Person’s Day and from 11am - 4pm there’s the opportunity to pop in for an hour or stay all day!

Cllr Tony Lee, Blackpool Council’s Older Person’s Champion, who will officially open the day said, “The Forever Young in Blackpool event is designed to be both informative and enjoyable. We know that there is a wide range of interests, in respect of the older members of our community, and we are trying to reflect that with a cross section of societies and organisations represented. But we also want to celebrate the very valuable contribution the over 50’s make to life in Blackpool and so the whole event is geared to be a lively day out as well as somewhere to get advice and help.

“The event will celebrate the huge contribution older people make to our society and economy creating a positive view of later life and tackling outdated stereotypes. It will also raise awareness of the opportunities and entitlements for older people across Blackpool and ensure older people don’t feel excluded or isolated from the rest of society.

To help the people of Blackpool to celebrate the contribution of older people an awards ceremony is to be held on October 1 with Jimmy Armfield presenting certificates. Many older people play a vital role in the community by volunteering or as carers and there will also be a quest to find the older person who has made the biggest contribution to Blackpool and an inspiring person who continues to lead an active lifestyle into their old age.

Cllr Lee added, “We’re very grateful to Jimmy Armfield for agreeing to present the awards on the day to our champions who have been nominated through the Gazette.”
Blackpool wants to mark the contributions that older people have made and also encourage people to find out what is happening in the town so that they too can take part.

In Blackpool, older people make up a substantial proportion of our population and there are many who have made, and are still making, a significant input to the town.

However, there are also some older people who are disconnected from the life of the town and may be feeling lonely and isolated.

It could be that people are looking for a new hobby and this would be a great way to find out more with over 12 societies and clubs represented. So if you fancy joining the Chess Society, the Civic Trust, Blackpool Folk Dancing Club or are interested in the Buddhist Centre to name but a few then pop along to find out more.

There will also be more than a dozen information stands covering subjects as diverse as winter warmth, the digital switch over, Blackpool Coastal Housing and Vitaline making it very easy to get help.

It has long been acknowledged that older people are good at volunteering and the Volunteer Bureau, Social Care Volunteers Team, Senior Voice, Links and Residents’ Association will also be on hand for those who want to get involved and give of their time.

There will also be outside activities with two town centre heritage walks and two regeneration walks each accommodating 20 people and lasting an hour. The first tour starts at 11.30am and take place every hour until 2.30pm. To book a place simply register as soon as you arrive but please be aware that numbers are limited.

Along side the exhibitions there will be a programme of music including Park School Band and the Bispham High Gospel Choir. And the Blackpool Arts Society will be staging an exhibition of their work, along side the Blackpool Branch of the Embroiderer’s Guild.

Add all of that to the opportunity to get involved in some gentle exercise and you have the makings of a grand day out!
