Fines for operators of takeaway

Dirt at takeaway
A routine complaint led environmental health officers to filthy conditions at the rear of the Millon Takeaway on Preston New Road, Freckleton.
In response to the complaint which was received on 11 February 2009, officers inspected internal and external areas of the premises on two occasions to find poor hygiene conditions.
A large pile of refuse, comprised of food containers and packaging, oil drums, waste cardboard and general litter had been allowed to accumulate and inadequate arrangements were in place for the hygienic storage and removal of this refuse.
Officers found that the accumulated refuse was providing a food source for rodents.
Inspection of internal areas revealed a dirty handwash basin and concerns regarding handwashing procedures. The operators of the business had also failed to comply with their own documented food safety management system.
Joint operators of the business, Supan Miah and Shaik Uddin Quereshi, who had operated the business for over 12 years, appeared at Blackpool Magistrates Court on 7 April 2010. Both pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to comply with food hygiene regulations and were each ordered to pay a £465 fine, £500 costs and the £15 victim surcharge. Magistrates heard that appropriate advice had been provided during previous hygiene visits, yet problems with refuse had persisted.
Clare Platt, Fylde Council’s director of Community Services, said: “The council’s Food Safety Team ensures that public safety comes first – and they have done a first-rate job with this business. This sends a clear message to all food businesses that good food hygiene standards are good for business.
“I look forward to this year’s introduction of the national star rating scheme. This “Scores on The Doors” system will allow customers will to make an informed decision about where they choose to buy and eat food.
“The scheme is intended to reflect hygiene standards for all premises that serve food to the public.”
