Recycle and save money

Fylde Council chiefs are reminding people to keep recycling their waste to help keep Council Tax bills down.

The reminder comes after the operators of the Clifton Marsh tip monitored the contents of Fylde Council bin lorries – and spotted that some householders were adding other waste to the green wheeled bins that are meant for garden waste.

The incorrect mixing of recyclables and non-recyclables could lead to the whole 10-tonne load of each lorry being sent to landfill – at a cost of £50 per tonne in Landfill Tax.

Allan Oldfield, Fylde Council’s director of customer and operational services, said: “People are doing a fantastic job in separating garden waste. They are saving themselves and their neighbours a small fortune in Landfill Tax which is ultimately paid by Council Tax-payers.

“Fylde Council has always provided low-cost and efficient services. We will keep things that way – but we need people to help us by keeping their green wheeled bin just for garden waste.

“Each lorry carries 10 tonnes of waste. The tip operators turn the garden waste into compost and they can’t do that if non-garden waste is mixed in. If there is any contamination, the entire 10-tonne load can be rejected and be sent to landfill – at a cost of £500 to the tax-payer.

“It only takes a handful of householders to recycle incorrectly to send the bill rocketing to thousands of pounds – money which is best remaining in people’s pockets!”

Fylde Council – what waste goes in each container?

Green wheeled bin: grass cuttings; garden prunings; branches and twigs; leaves; flowers; plants; wood shavings and bark.

Green box: plastic bottles; glass bottles and jars; clean drinks cans and food tins; aerosol cans; clean tinfoil and aluminium trays; textiles and shoes (in separate carrier bags).

White sack/blue bag: cardboard; newspapers; magazines; office paper; junk mail (no plastic); telephone directories; greetings cards (no glitter or fabric).

Grey wheeled bin: all other waste, including vegetable peelings and all kitchen waste.
