To celebrate ‘Compost Awareness Week’ and to say a big thank you to the residents of Fylde, who regularly compost their garden waste Fylde Borough Council, will be giving away 3 tonnes of compost made from the garden waste, which has been collected for composting in Lancashire.

The event is due to be held on Wednesday 5th May 2010 from 10am until 2pm. Residents are invited to come along to St Pauls Avenue Car Park, Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes to collect their free compost. The compost will be available on a first come first served basis, please remember to bring along your own bags to collect the compost, which will be limited to 2 bags per person.

But that's not all – compost bins are available for all householders in Lancashire at a cost of £14.00 per bin. Find out how to order your bin at the event and get some great advice on how to get started from the Compost Gurus.

The compost is being supplied by SITA UK who take over 50,000 tonnes of local garden waste across Lancashire and turn it into compost each year. This is collected through Fylde Borough Council’s kerbside collection service and at Lancashire County Council’s network of Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Using this kind of compost is the next best thing to making your own at home and it offers a double bonus for the environment. It saves buying peat-based composts which are collected from delicate natural environments. Also, composting is a safe natural treatment for waste such as grass cuttings and wood. If garden waste is buried in a landfill site it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Composting at home is one of the best ways to help the environment. For the last 8 years Lancashire has been amongst the most active areas in the UK for home composting with over 170,000 compost bins given to residents through the Lancashire Home Composting project. This has helped us to reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill by over 100,000 tonnes a year.

The compost bin orderline number is 0844 571 4444
