Fylde’s “youth MP” is urging young people to cast their vote in the 6 May General Election.
Helen Rendle, from Freckleton, was elected as Fylde’s Member of the Youth Parliament last year.
And she believes that as many young people as possible should follow the twists and turns of the election – and make sure they cast their vote for the candidate who best represents them.
Helen, a student of classical civilisation and drama, said: “I’m only 17 so I can’t vote this time round – but I’m itching to cast my vote as soon as I turn 18.
“Many young people believe that politicians only represent older people and so they don’t vote.
“In reality there are a lot of issues that young people feel strongly about, such as jobs, work experience and training. They should look closely at what the parties say about these issues and cast their vote accordingly.
“I’ve really enjoyed the campaign so far because important issues are being debated. I’m very keen to get the vote but I’m too young this time. I hope other young people will use their votes so that young people have a voice.
“This campaign is about the future of the country, so it is an ideal opportunity for young people to help shape their own future.”
Helen is one of 12 members of Lancashire’s Youth Parliament and one of 400 nationally. In Lancashire, the “youth MPs” meet regularly with MPs, councillors and county councillors. They meet regularly on a national basis where they can represent young people’s views to MPs, ministers and Euro-MPs.
