Celebrations in prom gardens
Fylde’s parks and open spaces are officially some of the best-kept in Britain after four of them gained Green Flag Awards this week.
Green Flag judges once again awarded Lowther Gardens, Lytham war memorial and Fairhaven Lake gardens the right to fly the Green Flag.
For the first time they also awarded Green Flag status to St Annes promenade and gardens.
Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “These awards recognise the best parks in the country. They look for excellent use of green space, good maintenance and general high standards.
“Visitors and residents have always appreciated these facilities which are well-known across the North West.
“All Fylde residents should be proud: these awards are not only recognition for parks and garden staff, they also recognise the efforts that volunteer groups put into our facilities.”
Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award.
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award scheme manager, said: “This is a remarkable achievement.
“The staff running the parks work very hard throughout the year to ensure their facilities are maintained to a high standard and are enjoyed by the whole community.
“As the recession bites and people look closer to home to enjoy the outdoors, the provision of high-quality, free open spaces is of particular importance.”
