Sharp-eyed members of the public are being urged to ring Fylde Council’s Environmental Health hotline if they see anyone fly-tipping or littering.
Council staff say they will investigate and prosecute offenders who dump rubbish in public places – but they need public help.
Mike Walker, Fylde Council’s Head of Public Protection, said: “Only the other week a member of the public reported seeing food waste and packaging being thrown from a van as it travelled along Queensway.
“Fortunately he took a note of the registration number, enabling officers to trace the driver and issue a Fixed Penalty Notice which has now been paid.
“Not only does litter and fly-tipped waste spoil our environment, it also costs the council thousands of pounds each year to remove and dispose of the waste – money which comes from the Council Tax.
“Single items of litter such as cigarette ends, chewing gum and discarded takeaway wrappers all mount up to an estimated two million pieces of litter being dropped each day in England.”
“If anyone sees anything like that, I would urge them to note down any details such as car registration numbers and even descriptions of the offenders and let us know promptly.”
The Environmental Health hotline number is 01253 658657. Alternatively, incidents can be reported online at: www.fylde.gov.uk
