Roadshow to probe housing target

People power is to determine how many new homes will be built in Fylde.
A series of public meetings will be held in towns and villages later this year to allow members of the public, civic groups and parish councils to have their say on how many new houses they would like to see in the local area.
The recent abolition of regionally imposed housing targets means that Fylde Council now has the responsibility to devise its own targets – and it will do so with a maximum degree of public involvement.
Councillor Trevor Fiddler, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Planning, said: ‘Until recently we had targets for new houses imposed on us by a regional spatial strategy that was driven by central government.
‘We now have the freedom to set our own targets and we will make sure they are what members of the public want.
‘We will be setting up a roadshow that will help the council listen to members of the public and the many civic groups we have in Fylde.
‘People in some areas may say they do not need more new homes, but other areas may say that they do. People know their own areas very well and we will listen to their views in setting Fylde’s own housing target.’
The number of meetings has not yet been finally decided, but all towns, parishes and villages will be involved.
Councillor Fiddler added: ‘The old system of nationally imposed housing targets made it difficult for us to resist some Green Field housing proposals submitted by the development industry. The developers were confident of lodging appeals against our decisions.
‘This new approach will allow the area to develop in a way that gives local people more of a say. It is important that people get involved.’
