Four Fylde sporting organizations and individuals have been nominated for this year’s Lancashire Sports Awards.

They are:

• Coach of the Year: Carl Pomfret of Lytham St Annes YMCA Football Club. Carl coaches and manages the under-14s team. His work involves weekly coaching sessions and administrative work. Carl’s work has led the team to an unprecedented series of titles and awards, such as the Lancashire FA County Cup, becoming North of England Champions and runners-up in the FA National Finals. The team also won the SCI Sports Tournament. Carl can be contacted on 01253 714082 or 07957 596326.

• Community Club of the Year: Lytham St Annes YMCA Football Club. The club involves boys and girls from age 6 to 16 and also runs an adult disability team – the only club in Fylde to do so. The club has gained the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award – the highest FA accolade. The team involves more than 250 youngsters. One of the teams won the Lancashire County Cup and was Northern England Champion. Three other teams won league championships and seven teams reached cup finals. Three teams were league runners-up. One team won a Fair Play award. The club has excellent links with local primary schools and holds a soccer school every year. Contact: 01253 714082 or 07957 596326.

• Lifetime Achievement. Lyndon Moore of Lytham St Annes YMCA Football Club. Lyndon has been involved in sport in the area for 35 years. Now vice-chairman and voluntary groundsman, his early career saw him achieve four successive league and cup doubles while taking teams on groundbreaking tours of Canada. He took over as part-time groundsman in 1980 at the much-admired pitches at Seafield Road. On numerous occasions he has received the FA’s Northern Region Groundsman of the Year Award. Despite being in ill health in recent years he has continued to work seven days a week at the grounds. Through Lyndon’s involvement, thousands of Fylde children have passed through the club. • Special Recognition Award: Frank Holden of Freckleton Cricket Club. Frank is the club development officer as well as being involved in cricket across Fylde. He is also fundraiser, coach and secretary for Fylde Cricket Development Group. He encourages members to qualify as coaches and has been under-15 team manager at district level. His outstanding legacy to local cricket is his determination to provide the area with proper net practice facilities – he succeeded in an application to the English Cricket Board for financial support to construct a four-bay net practice facility. David Parry, Fylde Council’s club support officer, said: “Fylde has lots of high-quality sports clubs providing excellent opportunities for the local community.

“These clubs rely heavily on volunteers to ensure their club operates effectively. The nominated individuals are very deserving of the public recognition for the work they do. I wish them every success in the Lancashire Sports Awards.”

The awards will be presented in November.
