Fylde supporters of fair trade are teaming up for the area’s annual Fairtrade pancake race.

Members of the local Fairtrade steering group, local businesspeople and Fylde Council staff will hold the annual race at noon on Tuesday 16 February at St Annes pier. The race is being held in the name of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 22 February to 7 March.

Race co-ordinator Paul Rowley, of the Lindum Hotel, is to supply pancakes. He said: “As a business we are keen to support Fairtrade.

“Through our partnership with Fylde Local Strategic Partnership and the local Fairtrade movement we are pleased to be working together to raise the profile of Fairtrade and to actively support in whatever way we can.

“This race is a fun event, but based on a serious message.”

The first race took place last year and saw the Bedford Hotel “running away” with the trophy.

Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “This race is something everybody can take part in.

“It’s a fantastic way of helping give others a fair chance in life and having great fun at the same time. We are delighted and grateful for the continued support of the public and local hoteliers for these events.”

The Rev Glyn Eatock, chair of Fylde Fairtrade Steering Group, added: “Last year’s race was a huge success in raising awareness of the plight of farmers in the developing world.

“It helps ensure that they receive the proper wages for the work that they do so that they can maintain family life and pay for their children’s education. I’m already in training to improve on where I finished in last year’s race!”

Councillor Paul Rigby, Fylde’s mayor, will start the race at noon on Tuesday 16 February. Spectators are welcome.
