Town hall’s fraud warning

Town hall chiefs are warning people to be on their guard after a fraudster tried to cheat debit card details out of a resident by pretending to be a Fylde Council worker.
The cheat rang a Kirkham woman and said her house’s Council Tax band had dropped from band D to band B.
To make a refund, he said, he would need her bank details. The lady’s husband intervened and stopped a fraud that could have led to the couple’s savings being wiped out.
Councillor Roger Small, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Finance and Resources, said: “People should be aware of this trick. Fylde Council staff would never make a call like this.
“Some cheats appear to be very plausible and I don’t want anyone to lose out in this way.
“Firstly, it is the Valuation Office that rebands properties. If there is a change to Council Tax bands, the council would notify people in writing. We would never have any need to take people’s card details.
“I hope people will be on their guard. Falling for this trick could be disastrous.”
