Job blooms in summer sun

Some of us are wilting in the summer heat. But for Fylde Council foreman Jason Pilmore, the heat gives him the reason to plunge into park ponds.
It sounds like the ideal job….until you realise that Jason’s job involves scooping out the tons of algae that have grown as the sun has shone.
In three days alone this week he has removed two tonnes of the green slimy stuff and still sees no end in sight.
Jason, a foreman gardener in Ashton Gardens, St Annes,, said: “None of it is wasted as it goes to compost and then goes onto the gardens. It’s a virtuous circle really.
“The excess weed isn’t a sign of dirty water as some people think. On the contrary, it’s a sign of healthy water and you’d be surprised how much wildlife depends on the pond.”
Jason uses a large net to scoop out the weed and he has to wear chest-high waders to get to the pond’s deepest parts.
He adds: “There’s more to the waders than just keeping the water out. There are a number of leeches in the water and I don’t want to meet any of them close up.”
