Parish and town councils across Fylde are being offered grants of up to £5,000 each for projects that improve the economic and social wellbeing of their area.
A total of £25,000 is being made available initially by Fylde Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) with a further £25,000 in early 2011.
Any of Fylde’s 15 town and parish councils can apply for the money, so long as they can “matchfund” at least 25 per cent of the amount they are bidding for either in cash or in kind.
Bernard Whittle, chair of the LSP which co-ordinates the work of Fylde Council, Lancashire County Council, police and fire services and others, said: “This is a chance for town and parish councils to develop their work for the community as a whole. Many small councils have projects they would like to do, but they rarely have the money.
“The money is for things such as lighting near community centres which will increase community safety or to fund local environmental improvements. I look forward to seeing what the variety of bids which come forward.
“Councils that succeed in bids could even use it as ‘seed money’ to lever in even greater sums of money from other organisations.
“What I think will be particularly popular is that parish councils can access bid funding for the first time. The 25 per cent ‘match’ contribution from them can be in cash or kind which offers a degree of flexibility, particularly to smaller parishes.”
Projects will be monitored by the LSP and, if successful, a second £25,000 will be offered next year.
