Consultants will be appointed this summer to work on a masterplan for Fairhaven Lake.

The masterplan will form the basis of a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund for money to make the lake and surrounding areas a major asset once more to Fylde.

The consultants will look at how the lake, its buildings, existing attractions and surrounding areas can be developed. Ideas could include things such as – for example - building refurbishments, indoor bowling, indoor tennis, new landscaping, a new promenade as at Cleveleys, desilting the lake, sailing yachts and cable skiing.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “This will be similar to what we did with Ashton Gardens – only far larger.

“The site is now 120 years-old and is looking a bit tired and shabby. It is not being used to anything like its full potential. The consultants will look at what modern visitors want to see and then draft a masterplan by next spring.

“We will be telling the consultants that they must involve the public at every step of the way.

“This is a very rare opportunity to recast the future of Fairhaven to make it a popular location for visitors in the 21st century.

“The consultants will work on an activity and business plan, costings, plans to conserve and restore existing features and a 10-year plan to ensure that progress continues into the future.”

The cost of consultants is being paid for by section 106 “planning gain” money received by Fylde Council as a result of the housing development at Queen Mary School.

Representatives of the media are invited to meet Darren Bell, Fylde Council head of parks, at Fairhaven Lake, on Tuesday 13 July. Appointments can be made to meet Darren by ringing Darren on 01253 658465 or via his colleague, Ben McCabe, on 01253 658615.

Stuart Connell from Lytham St Annes says...

Hi,

I am a Director of my own Quantity Surveying/Project Management company and work in construction and devlopment. I have recently been looing into the concept of "Wave Garden" (link www.wavegarden.com). This is a low energy/impact artificial wave in shallow water which can be used for for a number of activities, the main one being surfing, body boarding, stand up paddle baording amongst others.

Fairhaven Lake or part of the lake could be developed into a facility of this nature.

Surfing is one of the fastest growing pastimes in the UK and is a huge part of the tourist industry in Devon, Cornwall and Wales it is a healthy way to enjoy the water environment for all ages.

As a keen surfer I have travelled to many locations over the globe to surf and do travel long distances in this country surf, I can say from personal experience that there is nothing like it for feeling as though you are working with water while having great fun.

There is a prposed development at the moment in Bristol and there are published business plans available.

I would welcome the oportunity to discuss this with you or provide you further information on the concept.

I look forward to your response.

kind Regards,
Stuart
