People applying to housing associations and councils to rent a home will only have to fill in one form if a new housing policy is adopted in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
The streamlined procedure and revised policies on who gets priority for housing are now out to public consultation and, if adopted, will come into force in summer 2011.
Current applicants may have to complete a large number of application forms – one for each council or housing association. The proposed new system, called MyHomeChoice, will mean that one form will be used by all housing organisations.
The introduction of the new system also includes a review of who should be given priority for housing, and local housing organisations want to know whether people think that the proposals are fair.
Andrew Foot, Fylde Coast Housing Strategy Manager, said: “The current procedure is very time-consuming for people.
“Allocation of housing will still be based on factors such as need, time on the register and the area in which people live and work but the new system will simplify the application process and enable people to understand better their chances of getting the home that they are looking for.”
The proposed change has been worked on by a partnership of Blackpool Council, Fylde Council, Wyre Council and housing providers Blackpool Coastal Housing, Regenda, Muir, New Fylde Housing, Places for People and Great Places Housing Group.
Although the proposed change makes applying for a home simpler across the whole of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, homes will still be offered to people on the basis of their connection to local areas where they live and work.
Each of the three councils is consulting members of the public. Consultation runs until 17 September. People can collect a consultation pack from each council’s main reception area or, electronically, via:
