Lancashire Cricket Board’s only female cricket coach is hoping to put Fylde youngsters on the front foot with a series of summer cricket classes.
Community cricket coach Jenny Laycock was only eight years old when her family moved to a house that bordered on her village cricket field.
She became the only cricketing girl in the village and now, aged 22, is opening “batswoman” and offspin bowler for the county women’s side.
Recent months have seen her coaching youngsters at schools across Fylde – work she will continue in August with cricket courses in Kirkham, Wrea Green and Freckleton.
She said: “I started by watching cricket but then got hooked. Female players were very rare when I was a child but there are more and more of us these days.
“The courses are for boys and girls, but there are already more girls than boys signed up for the Freckleton course. It’s an ideal sport for women because it’s about technique as much as about strength.”
As well as work in schools, Jenny coaches Fylde teams of under-11s, under-13s and under-15s.
Coaching is for players ranging from beginners to those with years of experience.
Jenny, whose work at Fylde Council is funded by Lancashire Cricket Board, Sport England, Fylde Council and the School Sports Partnership, added: “Standards are already very high in Fylde and I really believe we have some young players who we should watch out for in the future.
“These courses aren’t just for experts. There are also courses that beginners can try to see if they like it.”
The courses are:
• Mon 9 August to Thurs 12 August, 10am-3pm. Cricket camp for girls and boys aged 6 to 11. Fun but challenging camp for budding cricket stars. Kirkham and Wesham Cricket Club, Woodlands Avenue, Kirkham. £40 for four days.
• Tues 17 August, 10am-3pm. Batting specialist camp for 11-15 year-olds. Wrea Green Cricket Club. £25.
• Thurs 19 August, 10am-3pm. Bowling and wicket-keeping specialist camp. Fast bowling, swing and spin, new drills for wicket keepers and fast feet and standing up techniques. Wrea Green Cricket Club. £25.
• Mon 23 August to Thurs 26 August. Cricket camp, including nets, drills, games and teamwork. £40 for four days.
