The Community Safety Partnerships of Fylde, Wyre and Lancaster are working together during the forthcoming World Cup campaign to inform football supporters about the consequences of celebration or commiseration following key matches.
The World Cup kicks off on Friday 11 June with England playing their first match on Saturday 12 June.
Throughout the Fylde area there will be a series of posters and leaflets displayed and distributed which draw on some stark figures from the 2006 World Cup. The campaign is financed by Lancashire Drug Action and Awareness Team.
In the UK, during the four-week World Cup 2006 period domestic violence increased by 31 per cent; drink-drive convictions rose by 22 per cent; anti-social behaviour due to excessive drinking rose by 62 per cent and drug abuse increased by 38 per cent.
Bryan Ward, Fylde community safety manager, explained: “What we are trying to achieve here is a message about the consequences of being thoughtless, not only to the victims of crime and anti-social behaviour but also to yourself if you don’t act responsibly.
“We want everyone to enjoy a trouble-free World Cup.”
In addition to the messages, Fylde pubs are to be allocated a supply of polycarbonate glasses which are proven to reduce of glass injuries as a result of drunken behaviour.
All posters will contain useful contact numbers for both victims and perpetrators where advice will be freely given.
