John and Dawn Prestwich

Tributes have been paid to Councillor John Prestwich who died in Trinity Hospice on Friday morning after a recent period of illness.

Councillor Prestwich, a Conservative member for Kilnhouse ward on Fylde Council, was Fylde’s mayor in 2007. He had served as mayor’s consort in the 1990s when his wife Dawn, also a councillor, served as mayor.

Blackpool-born Councillor Prestwich received a degree from the London College of Music – studies which led to a lifelong interest in music.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “John was a tremendously kind and knowledgeable person who was dedicated to serving the residents of Kilnhouse and Fylde.

“He had chaired the local residents’ association and was always busy in providing better facilities for the people of his ward.

“His work as the company director for an international business made him a highly effective councillor. He will be missed by members of all parties.”

Councillor Prestwich served as a vice-chairman of Fylde Council’s scrutiny committees and he was elected representative to the Board of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Blind Association.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “I think that John will be particularly remembered for stepping into the breach when Councillor Walton was unable to assume the mayoralty in 2007 and John took the position with less than a fortnight’s notice.

“However, he fulfilled the role with geniality and showed a genuine interest in people. He was a popular and dedicated first citizen.”

Councillor Prestwich leaves his wife, Dawn – also a Fylde councillor - and a grown-up family.

He was a trustee and member of The Drive Methodist Church in St Annes where a funeral service will take place at 1pm on Monday 14 June, before a 2pm service at Lytham Park Crematorium. Donations in lieu of flowers are requested for Trinity Hospice or for a bench seat in the Peace and Sensory Garden, St Annes, via the funeral director: Roland Whitehead, Old Lifeboat House, Eastbank Road, Lytham St Annes (telephone 01253 780860).
