A new Designated Public Protection Order (DPPO) will give police extra powers to stop any drink-fuelled rowdiness at Lytham Club Day on Saturday 26 June.

Fylde Council has passed the DPPO for Lytham Green. The Order does not stop drinking on the Green – but it does allow police to tell rowdy drinkers to behave or face confiscation of their drinks or even instant fixed penalty notices.

Police, Fylde Council, Fylde Community Safety Partnership, and Lytham Club Day Committee have worked together in recent months to ensure that Lytham Club Day runs smoothly with the minimum of disruption to the working life of the Town and a day which passes peacefully but remembered for all the right reasons.

As Club Day also coincides with the World Cup this year, special arrangements have been made to ensure litter is kept to a minimum. Community Payback teams and volunteers will help tidy up on both Saturday and Sunday.

Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council’s Cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Lytham Green now has a year-round DPPO for the first time.

“It means that the consumption of alcohol is not banned but offences are created if a person continues to drink alcohol or refuses to relinquish when requested to do so by a police officer or PCSO.

“We are keen for everyone to enjoy themselves – something that is impossible if things get out of hand.”

Police Inspector Laura Lawler said: “The club day is traditionally a family event. However, over recent years, the numbers drinking alcohol on Lytham Green have grown considerably which has led to potential public order situations.

“While the police fully support this local event new powers have been introduced to combat anti-social behaviour and public nuisance caused by excessive drinking.

“Lytham Green is now a Designated Public Place. Positive action will be enforced and drink will be removed and disposed of if the police feel there is potential disorder. Fixed penalty notices will be issued to offenders. I want everybody to enjoy the day but would urge moderate and sensible drinking.”

Bryan Ward, from Fylde Community Safety Partnership, said “ We clearly want everyone to have a memorable day and do not want to see anyone spoil it for the majority.

“We would urge everyone to be sensible particularly in and around licensed premises and if anyone sees anything untoward, to contact the police on 01253 293933 or Lancashire Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
