Cupid calls at Fairhaven Lake

Cupid strikes

Romance springs eternal at Fylde Council’s Fairhaven Lake.

A young Asian man from east Lancashire thought the lake was the ideal place to propose to his girlfriend last week – and he persuaded lake manager Greg Seddon to drive the boat while he got down on one knee.

It is the second time in recent years that young swains have persuaded Greg to lend them a hand in their romantic endeavour. There must be something about the Lytham air as both young ladies said yes.

Greg said: “I must be the council’s Mr Cupid as I keep getting asked to help in proposals.

“I was asked a few years ago to wait in the hut while a man proposed – and then come out with a bunch of flowers.

“Last week’s proposal was even more romantic. A man called Aziz rang me to say he had arranged a fly-past with a plane trailing a banner asking Farah, his girlfriend, to marry him.

“He wanted to be on Fairhaven Lake when the plane flew over, so he rang me in advance and asked me to drive a motorboat while he waited to propose.

“She knew nothing about it, but he was a bit nervous when he arrived and persuaded her to get in the boat. The plane arrived and he got down on bended knee in the boat. She was totally surprised but said ‘yes’.

“I had been nervous for him and was as relieved as he was that she accepted.”

Farah and Aziz, it seems, had never visited the lake before. The plane with the banner flew over the lake six times before its job was done.

Greg added: “It’s the best part of my job as the lake seems a special place to many people. Getting engaged there will stay in people’s kinds for the rest of their lives – and I’m honoured that they ask me to be involved.”
