Councillors last night (Monday) agreed to spend an extra £160,000 on refurbishment of Fylde’s crematorium chapel.
The crematorium will close for up to six weeks from 22 July to allow a £900,000 upgrade including installation of new cremators and pollution filter equipment to meet new environmental regulations aimed at reducing mercury and other emissions.
While the building is closed, workmen will move in to modernise the chapel with a new ceiling, new waiting room furniture, replacement windows, new curtains, a smartening up of the entrance and a refurbishment of pews.
Part of the extra £160,000 will also be spent on a new footpath along the entire length of the entrance driveway to improve pedestrian safety.
The crematorium and chapel will close for six weeks, in which time grieving families will have to travel to neighbouring crematoria at Carleton and Preston for cremation services. The cemetery will remain open as normal for burials.
Councillor Cheryl Little, Fylde Council Cabinet member for Social Wellbeing, said: “Funeral directors have been informed and they will be arranging for cremations to be held at neighbouring facilities.
“We apologise to relatives but this is the first time the chapel has been refurbished since 1994 and it has been looking a bit shabby.
“It has been difficult to refurbish the chapel since then because funerals are taking place every day. We have to close anyway to install new cremation equipment, so we are taking the opportunity to improve the chapel.
“Once the work is finished, the chapel will be a more dignified and comfortable place for relatives to pay their last respects.”
