Work has started on a new streetlighting scheme on St Annes sea front to replace outworn 1950s columns.
This is the first phase of a plan to bring about environmental improvements in the promenade area – and is linked to Fylde Council’s plans capitalise on the 2012 Golf Open.
The £105,000 scheme is funded by Fylde Council, Lancashire County Council and the North West Development Agency.
Thirty decorative columns will be erected between Beach Road to the Island and from the pier to St Annes Square.
Paul Drinnan, Fylde Council’s head of regeneration and tourism, said: “This will give a valuable visual uplift to the promenade – and will link to existing regeneration work in St Annes Square and on Wood Street.
“These streetlights will be unique to St Annes and will be the first of a number of projects to attract more visitors before, during and after the Golf Open.”
All lights will be “white light”, rather than the sodium light commonly used in Lancashire.
Work is expected to be completed within a month.
