Four-tonne compost giveaway
Four tonnes of compost was given away in just 30 minutes at Fairhaven Lake in Lytham on Wednesday.
The compost all starts life in Fylde gardens when householders put garden waste in Fylde Council’s green bins – and binmen take it to Clifton Marsh tip.
Staff at Clifton Marsh then shred it and aerate it before either selling it or giving it away for use in…Fylde gardens!
Allan Oldfield, Fylde Council’s customer and operational services manager, said: “It’s a virtuous circle. It starts as plant matter and then is recycled into compost which is used for gardens and other businesses.
“People in Fylde are great supporters of recycling and they put enough garden waste into their green bins to make about 7,000 tonnes of compost each year.
“It all gets used in gardens and businesses such as garden centres. None of it is wasted.”
Waste prevention officers had set aside four hours to give away the compost. It was so popular with members of the public, however, that it all went in 30 minutes.
Anyone who missed out on the giveaway can still buy some for £5 per bag at the borough’s two household waste recycling centres.
It is hoped to organise another giveaway in the summer.
