New lights have been installed on the front of St Annes pier pavilion as part of a wider scheme to illuminate the town at night.
The £20,000 scheme, jointly funded by the pier’s owners, Fylde Council and the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board, means that the pier can be seen from the town’s main square at night.
The works aim to boost the tourism economy by making the town centre more attractive at night.
Paul Drinnan, Fylde Council’s head of economic regeneration and tourism, said: “The lights were switched on this week and the pier now forms a focal point from the main square.
“It is a very attractive façade and complements the new streetlights that have already been erected on St Annes Road West and the promenade.
“Within the next few years we want to further enhance the area by illuminating other structures such as the promenade bandstand, fountain and lifeboat memorial statue.
“A number of hotels are already illuminated and we hope that more will become so in the run-up to the 2012 Open Golf tournament. It’s all about increasing the appeal of the town to visitors which will help the area economically.”
The pier’s new lights, which “uplight” and “downlight” the building use energy-conscious LED bulbs.
Chris Christou, of the St Annes Pier Company, said: “The pier is fundamental to the history of St Annes and it is hoped it can now be a more impressive focal point from the town square.
“St Annes Pier Company and its board of directors are pleased to be able to offer this addition to the town’s ever-growing list of attractions.”
