Motorhome parks plan to boost tourism

Fylde Council Logo

Five new seafront motorhome parks could soon be driving Fylde’s development as a forward-looking tourist area.

Proposals for new beach huts in St Annes were unveiled last week.

Now, councillors are consulting residents on proposals to introduce new motorhome parks to accommodate the growing numbers of motorhome enthusiasts.

Councillor Albert Pounder, Fylde Council cabinet member for customer and operational services, said: “There has been an explosion in motorhome ownership in the last 10 years – but their owners have few places to stay overnight.

“In resorts all over the country they are parking on residential roads and having to frequently drive around the block to avoid parking tickets.

“Establishing places where they can stay overnight will make Fylde an even more attraction destination for these prosperous visitors.”

The new proposal involves developing existing car parks at:

• North Beach;

• North Promenade;

• St Annes swimming pool;

• Fairhaven Road;

• St Paul’s Avenue;

• Stanner Bank.

Each car park will remain open to motorists.

Tourism authorities, often council-run, in France and Germany already provide popular Aire for Service and Stellplatz sites which feature toilet and wash facilities and electricity hook-ups.

Fylde’s proposed sites will charge £5 per night, allow stays of up to three nights, forbid outdoor cooking and the dumping of waste or rubbish.

Once established, if the parks are a success, a network of car parks could also be established in Blackpool and Wyre – giving coastal Lancashire a nationwide reputation for welcoming motorhomers.

Councillor Pounder added: “Motorhomers can be a nuisance to residents when they park on residential roads. We can relieve that problem and develop tourism further with this plan.

“We already have the car parks, so the cost would be minimal.

“Without a doubt, motorhomers are the sort of prosperous and well-behaved visitors that we want in Fylde. This is a new and growing market in which we can be ahead of our competitor resorts.”

As well as nearby residents, consultees will include neighbouring businesses and hotels.

How very far-sighted of you! We in the UK are light-years behind the rest of Europe in providing such facilities for motorhome users - who have completely different needs from caravanners. Well done Fylde; I'll be one of your first visitors and be spending my hard earned pension in your local economy just as soon as you get things established. Kep up the good work!

Chris Watson from Anglesey says...

Well Done and THANK YOU Blackpool and Fylde... When this starts off we will definitely be making use of the facilities. One thing which puts us off visiting Blackpool in our motorhome is the parking problem. We stayed on a site several years ago but it was too far for us to walk into Blackpool and if we drove the motorhome in, there was nowhere to park, even with our Blue Badge. Good luck, I am sure it will be a huge success. Hopefully other councils will take a leaf out of your book.

We spend a lot of our time touring France and Spain, where parking for us is not a problem. We would love to be at home putting money into the pockets of local business's.

As a resident of Lytham St Annes and a motorhome owner I think that this idea is long overdue. Motorhomers are just like any other tourist and can bring well needed money into our town shops and pubs. I understand that some of the local hotel owners are against this idea, but we need to broaden our town's appeal to reach additional types of tourist.

Well done an excellent move and let's hope it encourages other councils to follow you. As a fairly recent convert to motorhoming I can only see benefits to the area. Hotel and Guest house owners should not worry as motorhomers are very unlikely to be potential customers, except for the occasional evening meal treat but other shops will surely benefit.

I applaud this sensible move and hope it spreads across the country including inland places.

Has the council considered providing a place to discharge cassette toilets, you should provide more than just somewhere to park otherwise the situation may not change.

You need to provide a toilet emptying place, and somewhere to replenish our water tanks, and a decent size bin for our rubbish.

It's only common sense really if you want tourism, you need to satisfy our needs or we'll just carry on using the places we know already.

And you should consider making it free to park a motor home as some more forward looking towns already do, especially in Scotland, where most town happily invite our presence.

Wonderful. I have never been to your area in my motorhome, this will definitely encourage me to visit.

Usually I spend some considerable time in Europe where parking for motorhomes is easy and encouraged with special places for motorhomes.

The UK is sadly lacking in this respect so this is a great step forward and will encourage more of us to explore our own country.

wakk44 from Notts says...

Brilliant idea,we motorhomers have very few places to park in the popular seaside resorts and this idea could be used as an example to the rest of the country.
Most councils are anti m/homes citing problems of litter,toilet emptying and anti social behaviour,in reality the majority are mature,sensible ordinary people with a good income.
They will spend this in your local economy and no longer be made to feel like social outcasts with parking restrictions and height barriers.
If this idea was implemented at more locations in the UK it may stop the mass motorhome exodus to the continent every year.I will definitely support Fylde council's initiative and come and spend my hard earned money in your shops.

Having spent most of my childhood holidays in static and touring caravans around the Fylde area and my parents, in their 80s, still having a caravan near Kirkham. As a regular visitor to Lytham St Annes (every week as we have disabled friends who live at Ansdel) we applaud the efforts of the Council. we would pay £5 to stay overnight on a car park in our motorhome. We, with our friends would spend money eating out locally if we did not have to travel home afterwards, but we would not stay on a local campsite as we would have to drive and they are expensive.

It might be helpful, if there are any critics of the scheme, to note that this type of scheme is very common in most european countries and by and large is not abused. There are even books and web sites that tell you where to find "aires de service de camping car or stellplatz.

The facilities on these vary from nothing except overnight parking to full facilities and costs vary from free to expensive.

People using motorhomes are no more likely to leave rubbish than any other tourist - possibly less

My only concern is that it states that there would be no dumping of waste does this mean no toilet/grey water emtying point, if so not very good and needs to be addressed.

As mentioned by others above, this would be a great facility, and could encourage other local authorities around Britain to sit up and take note.
However, also as mentioned above, serious consideration should be given in the planning stage, to the provision of disposal points for grey waste, (dish washing water, etc), and black waste, (toilet tank), (such as Canterbury Council's model example at New Dover Rd P&R).
Any length of stay on these proposed sites, involves the use of onboard facilities, which will need servicing at least every two days, or so. Please give great consideration to this extremely simple, but very important servicing facility . They are widely available across mainland Europe, and predominantly found in residential areas.
Regards,
Jock & Rita

This is excellent news. Good forward thinking. You will attract me and many other motorhomers to Fylde, who will add to the economy of the area. At the moment it is easier for me to go abroad than stay in Britain, but I do go places in Britain and moves like this will encorageme to do so more. I have never encountered any problems on Aires abroad, either from motorhomers or from local people. Other Council's will be wondering why they didn't do it when they see what a success it will be.

I presume there will be somewhere to discharge grey and black water in the Borough, though not at every authorised site, or this would be a negative in attracting numbers of motorhomers - and we DO like to dispose of our waste properly

Well done Fylde B C. I love the towns of Fleetwood, Cleveleys and Bispham, and these towns, in addition to Blackpool centre would be so accessible for the motorhome owner when used alongside the tram network. A motorhome parking system works well in many towns and cities in France, and in the UK, Canterbury have coupled their own motorhome facilities to the "Park and Ride" network. We often need to refuel, top up with groceries and so on bringing revenue to local shops and of course eateries.

When visiting G.B. we always make your area one of our stops. We love Cleveleys for our lunch and then a walk around the shops, so a stopover in that area would definitely be very much appreciated. As for Blackpool parking with a motorhome is impossible at the moment.

we live about 1 hour from st.annes and if there were somewhere to park our motorhome overnight in the town centre we would frequently visit and spend our money in the shops and pubs etc.can't wait.

Any more news here? We have been visiting Scarborough lately but it seems they are starting to get bolshy about parking. So their short sightedness could cost them a lot of trade!

I am also awaiting news on the decision. We have just returned from the East Coast, Mablethorpe, all down the coast and round the wash ending up at Lowestoft. We found 90% of places we visited had height barriers and NO MOTORCARAVAN signs in the car parks. We couldnt even park for the daytime to spend our cash. Well done Blackpool and Fylde for their forward thinking, I just hope they are going to pull it off.

I was just seeking this information for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your web site. I wonder what is the Google's problem that does not rank this type of informative websites closer to the top. Normally the top web sites are full of garbage.

Excellent idea.I wish this would be adopted in the Lake District.
I will take advantage of all the good shops in St. Annes and the long promenarde walks.

Jane from Cheshire says...

We're going to give this place a try next week. St Annes looks a really lovely town & being able to park so close to the sea front & the town will be fantastic. If anyone can recommend any good pubs/restaurants, please leave a comment so we can check them out. I'll leave some feedback on our experience either whilst we're there or as soon as we get home. This seems to be the most forward-thinking council in the UK. We usually head to France & Germany but it'd be great to actually travel somewhere nearer, spend locally & not get hassled by out-dated by-laws & traffic wardens.
