Sue Fazackerley: deputy leader

Fylde Council has a new deputy leader after Councillor Roger Small stood down due to heavy work commitments.

He is being replaced with effect from Monday by Councillor Sue Fazackerley – a move that has prompted a minor reshuffle of other Cabinet positions at Fylde.

Councillor Fazackerley, member for Central ward, will remain as Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture while Councillor Tommy Threlfall, member for Freckleton East, will enter the Cabinet, initially as portfolio holder for Partnerships and Community Engagement. Councillor Karen Buckley, who currently holds the Partnerships and Community Engagement portfolio, will take over Councillor Small’s finance brief.

Councillor David Eaves, Fylde Council leader, said: “Roger has done great work for the council during his five years as deputy leader and is stepping down due to heavy work commitments as a headteacher in the Preston area.

“I am delighted that Sue Fazackerley has agreed to take over as deputy leader. She has vast experience as a councillor and Cabinet member. The reshuffle, taking effect from Monday, will retain a very strong and experienced team together with some new blood and I am confident we will continue to serve the people of Fylde well.

“Whitehall has said that all councils must reduce their budgets and the new team will be working hard to keep Fylde’s Council Tax below the Lancashire average while still providing good frontline services. It is a big challenge and I know that Cabinet members will rise to it.

“Over the next few weeks we will have a look at the content of some portfolios to make sure that the range of responsibilities matches with the particular experience and interests of our new political team, particularly in the areas of environmental protection and sustainability.

“This is a strong team that will prepare the council for its future challenges.”

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, new deputy leader, said: “I am very honoured to take on this role.

“I have a great respect for Councillor Eaves with whom I share a belief in working with all members of the council as a means of promoting the best interests of the borough.”
