SPLASH Water Play Area opens in time for spring

The highly anticipated SPLASH water play area in St Annes Promenade Gardens has announced an official opening date of Wednesday 3rd April 2019.

The Promenade Gardens Friends group have been working in partnership with Fylde Council since 2016 on this community project to create a fully inclusive splash park facility on the Promenade Gardens in St. Anne’s.

The project, costing around £259,000 was achieved through funding from Fylde Council as well as grant aid raised by the friends group including LCC Environment and Community Projects Fund, Lancashire Environmental Action Fund, Section 106 contributions, LCC Local Members Grant Scheme and local business donations.

Following a comprehensive tender process, a specialist company called Kingcombe Aquacare Ltd was commissioned to construct the splash park in 2018.

The facility is housed in the former disused paddling pool area on the Promenade Gardens in St. Anne’s, and is surrounded by amphitheatre style seating and attractive landscaping. It has been designed to preserve and be sympathetic to the wider Edwardian gardens.

There are a wide variety of interactive water play features within the design which accommodates children aged 3-12 years. These include in-ground jets, above ground features for toddlers and large above ground features for juniors. There is also a jet zone on the right of the splash pad, which produces a shallow splash zone, allowing the toddlers who are less confident with water to have a calm experience without getting sprayed.

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Sue Fazackerley, added “this is the realisation of a dream for me. This area has been long neglected and when I became Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure I managed to persuade my Cabinet colleagues to back the scheme to the tune of £150k. The Council has also released over £70k in s.106 monies [monies from new development for community use] to put towards the scheme. It is an excellent use of a well-loved feature of the Promenade Gardens”.

Ian Roberts, Chair of the Promenade Gardens Friends Group said: “We are delighted to see this project come to fruition. We know from the extensive consultations we did in the early stages with the public, both local residents and visitors to St Annes, just how eagerly anticipated this facility is and we are confident that it will create happy family memories for many years to come. Also, it has been a pleasure to work alongside the brilliant staff at Fylde Council.

Councillor Cheryl Little, Chair of the Tourism and Leisure Committee for Fylde Council said: “This beautiful new splash park is the first of its kind for Fylde and will be instantly popular with lots of families and visitors. It is a great addition to tourism and a brilliant asset to the Borough and will enhance the promenade for years to come.”

The Splash park is free to enjoy and will be open Monday to Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm from April to September with a capacity of 120 people at any time. A splash park attendant will be available to supervise the facility.

Please note than this is a fair weather facility and is subject to suitable weather conditions. Fylde Council may close the facility at any time if the weather is not suitable.
