Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – Top Tips to Waste Less

  • Reduce unnecessary packaging during your weekly shop:
  • Try buying fruit and vegetable loose
  • Look for concentrated washing powders and liquids
  • During festive seasons buy items with 100% packaging – avoid selection boxes at Christmas and Easter Eggs that have an inner plastic tray which usually can’t be recycled.

  • Reduce the amount of addressed junk mail that is delivered to you by signing up to the Mail Preference Service at www.tpsonline.org.uk or Tel: 0845 703 4599.
  • Reduce the amount of tinfoil (which is very energy intensive to make) and clingfilm you throw away by using reusable containers in your lunch box or when wrapping foods to put in the fridge and freezer.

  • Raising children can be an expensive business. Choosing reusable nappies will help save the environment as well as money. Find out more at real nappies
  • One persons rubbish is another persons treasure – give old items of furniture, DVDs and clothing a new lease of life - by reusing them through local charities or sites such as freecycle
  • Buy reusable items such as batteries, razors and cleaning cloths rather than one use disposable items.
  • Remember to take a reusable bags to the shops, rather than collecting hundreds of plastic carrier bags a year.
  • Choose goods that have refillable options such as cleaning products and coffee.
  • Consider using a milkman, a glass milk bottle is reused approximately 20 times before being recycled and you have the convenience of milk delivered to your door.

  • The Council offers a kerbside collection service of 7 different materials in the green box/blue bin, blue&white sack/brown bin and the green bin
  • Many items including hard plastics, tetra pak, wood and rubble and hardcore can be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (tip)
  • Battery collection points are available at various locations across the borough including many local primary schools, Fylde Direct on Clifton Drive, St Annes and the Household WasteRecycling Centre (tip)
